About This Route
Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary sits at the end of a dead-end road in the Tennessee mountains — the most remote maximum-security prison in American history, and the place James Earl Ray tried to escape from. We ride up through the Cherohala corridor, spend the night near Maryville, tour the prison, and loop back through the Ocoee River country and Nantahala Gorge. Dark history, incredible roads.
Route Highlights
- Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary — former home of James Earl Ray
- Cherohala Skyway corridor on the return
- Tennessee River Gorge + Ocoee River country
